An X-ray generator is a device that powers an X-ray tube by supplying it with an electrical current, producing X-rays. X-ray generators are the primary control mechanism for fluoroscopes and are used in a variety of applications, including airport security and student baggage screening. 

Here are some things to know about X-ray generators:

  • Types

    X-ray generators can be single-phase, three-phase, constant potential, or high-frequency. High-frequency generators are often used in new radiographic equipment because they are compact, affordable, and have low repair costs. 

  • Components

    X-ray generators contain transformers, diodes, rectifier circuits, filament and stator circuits, timer switches, and kilovolt and milliampere meters. 

  • Control

    The operator uses the generator control console to set the tube voltage, tube current, exposure time, and other parameters. 

  • Focal spot size

    The size of the focal spot on the X-ray tube affects the magnification of the image. Smaller spot sizes are more expensive, but are useful for magnifying objects. 

  • X-ray tube

    The X-ray tube contains the cathode, which emits electrons, and the anode, which produces X-rays.
